Review of the fossil material of the genus Mammuthus from the collections of the museums of the Ústí nad Labem Region

Abstract

The genus Mammuthus is a genus with an extensive stratigraphic, palaeoecological, and paleontological influence. This group of Proboscideans is often overlooked within the Czech Republic. Within this thesis, material originating from Ústí nad Labem Region was analysed and classified based on diagnostic traits of these animals. This restricted morphometric analysis is based on the comparison of diagnostic traits of the material from Ústí nad Labem Region, control group material originating from non-Ústí nad Labem Region localities and published data. Results of the morphometric analysis showcase surprising diversity and a deep record of mammoth evolution which the Ústí nad Labem Region provides. The thesis is complemented by a summary of historical research as well as the taxonomy and morphological overview of Eurasian mammoths. Rod Mammuthus je rodem s velkým stratigrafický, paleoekologickým a paleontologickým významem. Tato skupina chobotnatců je v České republice často přehlížena. V rámci této práce je zhodnocen a zkoumán materiál pocházející z Ústeckého kraje na základě diagnostických znaků těchto zvířat. Tato omezená morfometrická analýza je založena na porovnání diagnostických znaků na materiálu z Ústeckého kraje, kontrolních vzorků pocházejících z mimo-Ústeckých lokalit a publikovaných dat. Výsledky morfometrické analýzy poukazují na překvapivou diverzitu a obsáhlý záznam mamutí evoluce kterou Ústecký kraj poskytuje.
