Komentovaný překlad: Michael Billig, Banal Nationalism. Sage, 1995, část druhé kapitoly

Abstract

The work is a commented translation of part of the second chapter "Nations and Languages" from the book Banal Nationalism by Michael Billig, translated from English to Czech. In the stylistic analysis of the source text, I classified it within the field of sociology and social history, highlighting the interdisciplinary approach of the author. A significant aspect of this style is the emphasis on everyday nationalism, which is pervasive yet often unnoticed. The language of the book is predominantly academic, yet it also contains expressive elements that contribute to the vibrancy of the text. The sentence structure is often complex, which needed to be taken into account during the translation process. It was also necessary to consider that the Czech readership has less familiarity with the concept of banal nationalism. Therefore, in several instances, I had to explicate the text to ensure that foreign elements did not appear disruptive and the text remained accessible to a broader audience. However, I endeavored to avoid excessive localization to preserve the original intent and structure of the text. Práce je komentovaný překlad části druhé kapitoly "Nations and Languages" z knihy Banal Nationalism od Michaela Billiga z angličtiny do češtiny. Při stylistické analýze výchozího textu jsem jej zařadil do oblasti sociologie a sociálních dějin, přičemž text vychází z interdisciplinárního přístupu autora. Významným prvkem tohoto stylu je důraz na každodenní nacionalismus, který je všudypřítomný, ale často nepovšimnutý. Jazyk knihy je převážně odborný, ale zároveň obsahuje expresivní složky, které přispívají k živosti textu. Větná skladba je často složitější, což bylo nutné zohlednit při překladu. Zároveň bylo nutné brát v potaz, že česká čtenářská obec má menší povědomí o konceptu banálního nacionalismu. Na několika místech jsem tedy musel text explikovat, aby cizí prvky nepůsobily rušivě a text byl přístupný širšímu publiku. Přílišné lokalizační tendenci jsem se však snažil vyhýbat, aby byl zachován původní záměr a struktura textu. Při překladu docházelo ke konstitutivním posunům, které vycházely ze skutečnosti, že kapitola využívá expresivní jazyk a složité syntaktické konstrukce, což často vyžadovalo tvůrčí přístup k nalezení částečných ekvivalentů v češtině.
