The aim of this bachelor thesis is to translate in its entirety the first chapter of Paul Davies9s book The Demon in the Machine. The selected chapter serves as an introduction to Davies9s research on the origins of life, its nature and the difference between living and non-living matter. The theoretical part presents a commentary on the translation process and the source- text itself, including the analysis of both intra- and extratextual factors, the description of the translation method, the typology of translation shifts, and finally the analysis of translation problems and their solutions.
