Comparison of Key Aspects of Jane Austen's Emma and its Contemporary Film Adaptations

Abstract

Bakalářská práce porovnává původní román Emma (1815) Jane Austenové s jeho filmovými adaptacemi: první z nich je Emma (1996) od režiséra Douglase McGratha a druhá Emma (2020) od režisérky Autumn de Wilde. Zkoumá především děj, hlavní postavy a společenská témata jako např. důležitost bohatství, společenské postavení a posílení postavení žen ve společnosti. Teoretická část shrnuje děj díla a analyzuje ho z pohledu hlavních postav, Emmy Woodhouse a pana Knightleyho, a to především z pohledu sociálního postavení. Práce se proto zaměřuje na popis důležitých aspektů společnosti. Ty inspirovaly Jane Austenovou k napsání románu, a i ke způsobu, jakým je ve svých dílech reflektovala. Teoretická část také popisuje teorii filmových adaptací knihy a shrnuje informace o těchto dvou filmových adaptacích Emmy. Praktická část popisuje podrobnosti a rozdíly mezi oběma filmovými verzemi a jejich knižním protějškem. Důraz je kladen hlavně na vyobrazení společenských témat a postavení žen. Práce prezentuje jednotlivé rozdíly mezi oběma filmovými verzemi a knižní předlohou a pokouší se je zdůvodnit. Dále také specifikuje, jak se filmová provedení změnila v čase.

This bachelor thesis compares Jane Austen's original novel Emma (1815) with its film adaptations: Emma (1996) by the director Douglas McGrath and Emma (2020) by the director Autumn de Wilde. It focuses on the plot's perspective, the protagonists, and the social themes such as the importance of wealth, social position, and female empowerment. The theoretical part summarises the novel's plot and analyses it from the perspective of the protagonists, Emma Woodhouse and Mr Knightley, and especially from the perspective of their social position. The thesis, therefore, focuses on describing prominent aspects of society that inspired Jane Austen to write the novel and how she reflected it in her works. The theoretical part also describes the theory of adapting a book and summarises information about both the film adaptations of Emma. The practical part identifies and presents the details and differences between both the film versions and their literary counterpart. Special attention is dedicated to the portrayal of social themes and the position of women. The thesis emphasises the individual changes between both film versions and their source and tries to explain some reasons behind that while also specifying how the film renditions change over time.
