Hedging Strategies in English BA and MA Theses Conclusions

Abstract

Tato práce si klade za cíl identifikovat a analyzovat prostředky hedgingu v závěrech bakalářských a diplomových závěrečných prací nalezených v Digitálním repozitáři FFUK. Jedná se o 50 závěrů klasifikačních prací studentů anglického jazyka, kteří nejsou rodilými mluvčími angličtiny a kteří v minulých letech úspěšně obhájili jak bakalářskou, tak diplomovou práci. Schopnost vhodně používat prostředky hedgingu je považována za jeden z indikátorů pragmatické jazykové kompetence, která by měla být v průběhu studia anglického jazyka postupně zdokonalována. Práce pracuje s předpokladem, že v mezidobí mezi napsáním bakalářské práce a diplomové práce si studenti lépe osvojí konvence akademického psaní, a tedy že závěr diplomové práce daného studenta bude vykazovat více hedgingu, než vykazoval závěr jeho bakalářské práce. Úvodní teoretická část této práce představí základní pojmy, se kterými bude pracovat analýza, a mimo jiné i podrobně vysvětlí samotný pojem hedgingu. Proces výběru a shromažování dat pak bude popsán v metodologické části práce; v této části bude také popsána hedgingová klasifikace, na jejímž základě budou v této práci jednotlivé prostředky hedgingu identifikovány a analyzovány. This thesis aims to iden琀椀fy and analyze instances of hedging present in English-wri琀琀en conclusions of BA and MA theses, which have been found in the Digital Repository of the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University. These 50 thesis conclusions have been wri琀琀en by students of English who are non-na琀椀ve English speakers and who have successfully defended both a BA thesis and an MA thesis in the past. Knowing when to appropriately use hedging in a foreign language is considered an indicator of a language learner's pragma琀椀c competence, and students of English are supposed to further hone this skill over the course of their studies. This thesis is based on the hypothesis that in the interim between successfully defending their BA thesis and 昀椀nishing their MA thesis, each student has managed to achieve a be琀琀er understanding of conven琀椀ons of academic wri琀椀ng, and therefore the conclusion of a student's MA thesis may poten琀椀ally display a greater number of hedging elements than the conclusion of their BA thesis.
