Direct speech and characterization in J. R. R. Tolkiens' novels

Abstract

This bachelor thesis explores the impact of direct speech on the overall characterization of a literary character and the distinctive linguistic means employed to achieve this. The thesis examines direct speech of two characters in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings - Aragorn and Sam. Their speech has been manually excerpted from the whole body of the trilogy in electronic form and analyzed using corpus linguistic tools and methods. The theoretical part of this thesis describes the function and formation of direct speech, as well as its potential paraphrasing forms. Moreover, the distinctive linguistic features within The Lord of the Rings are described on the level of typical key words along with syntax. The practical part analyses direct speech of the selected characters on the basis of a qualitative analysis of keywords and their collocations. KEYWORDS J. R. Bakalářská práce se zabývá otázkou, jestli má přímá řeč postavy prominentní vliv na charakterizaci postavy a jak se případný vliv přímé řeči projevuje. Práce zkoumá přímou řeč dvou postav trilogie Pán prstenů J. R. R. Tolkiena - Aragorna a Sama. Přímá řeč obou postav byla manuálně excerpována z celého textu v elektronické podobě a za pomoci nástrojů a metod korpusové lingvistiky analyzována. V teoretické části bakalářské práce je popsána funkce a tvorba přímé řeči, stejně jako její možné parafráze. Dále jsou popsány charakteristické jazykové rysy v rámci celé trilogie, a to na úrovni slova i větné skladby. V praktické části je pak následně analyzována přímá řeč vybraných postav na základě kvalitativní analýzy klíčových slov a slovních spojení. KLÍČOVÁ SLOVA J. R. Tolkien, přímá řeč, korpusová stylistika
