Centre and Periphery. Failed Intertranslation in Franz Kafka’s At the Construction of the Great Wall of Chinacs
uk.abstract.enThe article investigates the failed translation of center into the periphery, and vice versa, in Kafka’s story. In the frame narrative, this translation is examined by the periphery; in the embedded parable, that was published during Kafka’s lifetime under the title An Imperial Mission, it is prompted by the center. Despite this mirroring relation between the frame narrative and the embedded parable, the reader is prevented from smoothly translating them into one another. Yet just as Kafka takes care to save from oblivion that which remains untranslated in the first two translations, he expects the reader to do the same in translating one narrative into the other.cs
