James Joyce in Czech Environment: A Comparative Analysis of Translations of the Short Story "The Dead"

Abstract

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá srovnávací analýzou čtyř překladů povídky "The Dead" ze sbírky Dubliňané od známého irského autora Jamese Joyce. Pro analýzu byly vybrány překlady Josefa Hrůši (1933), Zdeňka Urbánka (1959), Aloyse Skoumala (1988) a Kateřiny Hilské (2012). Hlavním cílem této práce je překlady analyzovat a porovnat jednotlivá řešení překladatelských problémů na úrovni lexikální, stylistické i syntaktické. Během hodnocení překladů se posuzuje adekvátnost překladatelských řešení, do jaké míry je překlad věrný vůči originálu a zda zachovává významy, které analyzované jazykové prvky nesou. Bakalářská práce nejprve uvádí dílo do kontextu, popisuje historii překladu děl Jamese Joyce v Čechách a představuje čtyři překladatelé Dubliňanů. Následně se analyzuje výchozí text z hlediska vnětextových a vnitrotextových faktorů. Dále se bakalářská práce věnuje přímo analýze čtyř překladů a na závěr uvádí shrnutí postupů jednotlivých překladatelů.

This bachelor thesis deals with a comparative analysis of four translations of the short story "The Dead" from the collection of short stories called Dubliners which was written by the well-known Irish author James Joyce. Four translations were selected for the analysis - translations by Josef Hrůša (1933), Zdeněk Urbánek (1959), Aloys Skoumal (1988) and Kateřina Hilská (2012). The aim of this thesis is to analyse Czech translations and compare individual methods the translators undertook and examine them on the lexical, stylistic and syntactic level. The evaluation of translations will be based on the degree of translation adequacy. It analyses to what extent the translation mirrors the original text and to what extent it preserves the meaning of the analysed expression. Firstly, the bachelor thesis puts Dubliners into context and describes the history of the translations of James Joyce's works in Bohemia and introduces the four translators of Dubliners. Secondly, the study analyses Joyce's short story in terms of extratextual and intratextual factors. Subsequently, the thesis deals directly with the analysis of four translations and in conclusion gives a summary of the procedures of individual translators.
