Fluctuation and Split Identity: Female Heroines and the Black Middle Class in Nella Larsen's Passing

Abstract

Cieľom tejto práce je argumentovať, že román Passing od Nelly Larsen neznázorňuje iba myšlienku zmeny rasy, ale do hĺbky sa sústreďuje na otázky rozdvojenej identity, vzťahovej nestability a pocitu odcudzenia v komunite. Práca sa zameriava špecificky na ženské postavy v románe. Hlavným argumentom práce je, že identita ženských hrdiniek, či už rasová alebo osobná, je rozdelená a nesúdržná, čo nepochybne vedie k ich boju o zabezpečenie si miesta v komunite, ako aj vo svojich osobných vzťahoch a domovoch. Práca najskôr predstavuje obdobie Harlemskej renesancie, do ktorého sa román a jeho autorka zaraďujú, a približuje čitateľom historický kontext, ktorý zohral významnú rolu v tvorení novej identity dvadsiateho storočia. The aim of this thesis is to propose that Nella Larsen's novel Passing does not simply depict the idea of changing race but dives deep into the issues of split identity, relationship instability and community alienation. The focus is on the female characters in the novel. I argue that the identity of the female heroines, both racial and personal, is split and inconsistent, which results in them struggling to secure the position in the communities as well as in their personal relationships and homes. The thesis begins by introducing the period of the Harlem Renaissance, in which the novel and its author are located, and provides the readers with the historical context, which represented a crucial denominator in the emergence of the New Negro identity in the twentieth century. The thesis then focuses on the existence of black bourgeoisie in Harlem and discusses class affiliation as a crucial factor in the creation of the novel. The aim of the thesis was also to introduce the topic of "Racial Passing" from historical and cultural perspective and interconnect it with the idea of split-identity that characterizes this phenomenon.
