Depiction of the British Monarchy in Significant Online Media 2021-2023

Abstract

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tím, jak byla britská monarchie zobrazována v britských online médiích v letech 2021 až 2023. V tomto období došlo k významným změnám, včetně úmrtí prince Filipa, platinového jubilea královny Alžběty II a jejího úmrtí a korunovace krále Karla III. Na základě zkoumání tří významných novin: The Guardian, The Independent a The Times, přináší tento výzkum ucelený přehled o zobrazování monarchie a jejích členů během těchto důležitých událostí. Pro analýzu mediální reprezentace byly ve výzkumu použity dvě metody. Z první kvantitativní obsahové analýzy vyplynulo, že je mediální vyobrazení monarchie velmi spletité. Z analýzy bylo patrné, že média hovořila o monarchii v souvislosti s mnoha různými tématy, přičemž nejčastějším tématem byla budoucnost monarchie. Druhá analýza, tzv. zakotvená teorie, ukázala, že monarchie jako instituce je charakterizována mnoha různými popisy, které jsou často protichůdné. Hlavním výsledkem zakotvené teorie bylo poukázání na různé role, které zaujímají členové královské rodiny. Tyto role byly poté vymezeny jako žádoucí, nebo nežádoucí v závislosti na tom, jak se shodovaly s požadavky, které na monarchii kladla média, což je další výsledek kvalitativní analýzy. This thesis explores the portrayal of the British monarchy in the British online media between 2021 and 2023. The period under examination was marked by a number of significant occurrences, including the death of Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth's platinum jubilee and subsequent passing, and the coronation of King Charles. By examining three major newspapers: The Guardian, The Independent, and The Times, this thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the portrayal of the monarchy and its members during these significant events. In order to analyse the media representation, two distinct methods were employed. The initial quantitative content analysis revealed that the depiction of the monarchy in the media exhibited a high degree of complexity. The analysis demonstrated that the media discussed the monarchy in relation to a wide range of topics, with the most prevalent being the future of the monarchy. The second analysis, the grounded theory, revealed that a variety of labels, frequently contradictory, were used when discussing the institution of the monarchy. Nevertheless, the primary outcome of the grounded theory was the identification of the diverse roles assumed by the members of the royal family in the media.
