Abstract

Tato práce se zaměřuje na obraz Irska ve fantasy literature, od stereotypů a prvků folklore po zemi a její jazyk. Prvky irského folkloru a samotného Irska a jeho historie se dají vysledovat přes mnoho fantasy knih až k počátku žánru. Mnozí autoři fantasy, kteří používají irské prvky ve svých knihách, nicménéně nevyhnutelně používají stereotypy spojované s Irskem. Často dochází k používání míst a postav inspirovaných Irskem jakožto fantastických znaků odlišnosti. Cílem této práce je zaměřit se na odrazy Irska ve fantasy žánru a nejen představit, jakými způsoby mnozí autoři fantasy používají irské stereotypy, ale také prozkoumat, zda některá z děl přistupuje ke stereotypům tak říkajíc z druhé strany, se záměrem je použít k dosažení nových efektů. Úvodní první kapitola slouží k ustanovení cílů a argumentů práce; také popisuje strukturu práce a postup, jakým budou odrazy Irska ve fantasy literatuře prozkoumávány. Druhá kapitola zasazuje práci do kontextového rámce z hlediska irských stereotypů. Zabývá se třemi příklady anglických autorů píšících o Irsku a zkoumá způsoby, kterými tyto texty přispěly ke vzniku irských stereotypů, které se později objevují i ve fantasy literatuře. This thesis focuses on the image of Ireland in fantasy, from tropes, stereotypes, and elements of folklore to the country and its language. Elements of Irish folklore and even Ireland itself and its history can be traced throughout many fantasy books from the very inception of the genre. However, many fantasy authors using Irish elements in their works also inadvertently use the stereotypes connected to Ireland, often using the Irish-inspired places and people as a representation of the fantastical "Other". The aim of this thesis is to examine reflections of Ireland in the fantasy genre, and to not only present the way many fantasy authors use stereotypes connected to Ireland, but also consider whether some of the works manage to subvert those stereotypes to new effects. The introductory first chapter serves to establish the thesis' argument and aims, as well as the structure of the examination of the reflections of Ireland in fantasy literature. The second chapter establishes contextual frame for the thesis. It looks at three examples of English authors writing about Ireland and examines the way those works help in the creation of the Irish stereotypes appearing in fantasy literature.
