The aim of this thesis is to document the occurrence of a horse, its domestication and its role in particular stages of Chinese antiquity, focusing especially on the changes and development of its use during these periods. The thesis is divided into sections based on the different historical periods. A brief description of the political and social situation of a specific period is provided at the beginning of each chapter. The uses of horses in this period follows and is divided by it's particular functions. We will mention some of the archaeological findings of the pre-imperial era throughout the thesis, where the horse, its harnings and chariots have been an essential part of cultural or historical relics. We will point out some of the written texts in which we can trace mentioning of the horse from early Chinese texts. Appendix I summarizes the main spiritual ideas associated with the role of horses and explains some equine deities. Appendix II describes selected important sites, where horses were documented. The final chapter is devoted to the most famous Chinese horse physiognomist Bole. The thesis is primarily based on secondary sources written in Western languages and primary ancient Chinese texts.
