dc.description | The study is devoted to the development of Pondicherry during the French Revolution, specificallyin the years 1785–1791. The author in the introduction the author recapitulates historiography devotedto the impacts that the French Revolution had in the French territorial possessions in India. He explains, why the French Revolution in the French colonies in India had a specific character. Itwas due to reaction to the unsatisfactory policy of the old regime in the preceding period, likewisefrom unsatisfactory and unpopular reforms in numerous spheres. The news about the Revolution inFrance led to creating representative bodies that would not solve the same problems like the FrenchNational Assembly. The following course of the Revolution in Indian colonies was dynamized by primarymilestones of the development in France whose impact in each of the colonies was different. The development in Pondicherry was relatively calm. The main point of disputes was the question ofinvolving classes of Indians and Eurasians into political process. While requests of the half-breedshad been accepted, crowds of Indian citizens remained beyond the politic structure despite the rolethey had in the economic life of the colony. The key revolutionary requests formulated in that colonyin February 1790 would be accepted by the National Assembly due to a trouble free characterfor the centre in Paris. | |
