dc.description | The study deals with the significance of the ceremony of blessing the mother after birth in Bohemia and Moravia in the period from the 16th to the 21st century. It focuses a different accents in the approach of folk belief, which is reflected in folk customs and the significance which to the ceremony attributed Church. The ceremony of blessing the mother after birth was one of the most important rituals in the life of Bohemian and Moravian people from the Middle Ages until the late 19th century. We are convinced by this fact not only by ceremonial elements of folk traditions, but also by the fact that the forms of the ceremony of this blessing were ranked in the liturgical books between the sacraments and blessing accompanying significant life milestones, such as marriage, baptism and burial. Church blessing ceremony accompanied by many folk customs, both of which formed integral whole, ritual complex which accompany the transition women from the status of puerperas as those excluded from the local community to the status of the mother, adopted in this social status. The text does not deal with the description of folk rites, or socio-cultural context, e.g. high maternal and infant mortality, marital and extramarital fertility and other phenomena that have a direct impact on the development of the ritual elements connected with our theme. Attention is focused on the elements of a religious ceremony of blessing the mother after birth, its origin, form and meaning from the perspective of the Church. The work is based primarily on an analysis of blessing texts included in the liturgy books of the churches active in Bohemia and Moravia, as well as texts which attempt to present an exposition of the ceremony meaning, homiletic literature — Czech postils by Catholic and Evangelical authors and specialist theological literature, specifically liturgical textbooks and specialist journals. Particular attention is paid to Catholic liturgy ceremony from which ceremonies of other religion are derived. | |
