dc.description.abstract | The thesis addresses Tertullian's and Clement's view regarding marriages, especially second marriages, i. e. marriages of widows and widowers. The objective of the thesis is an analysis of Tertullian's and Clement's view on this topic. The thesis includes the basic summary of the attitude to second marriage in Jewish tradition, Greek and Roman philosophy, the New Testament and in patristic literature, with the emphasis being put on the teaching of St. Paul, whose letters are crucial for both Tertullian and Clement. The thesis also includes a brief overview of life and work of Clement and Tertullian and a short characteristic of the crucial parts of their theology. The development of their position on marriage, chastity and second marriage is illustrated by their own writings, Clement's Stromata and Tertullian's trilogy De Uxore, De Exhortatione Castitatis and De Monogamia, special focus being put on De Exhortatione Castitatis, an annotated translation of which is attached to the thesis. | en_US |
| cs_CZ |
