Active Externalism within the Philosophy of Mind

Abstract

The subject of this thesis is a detailed description and critical reflection on the concept of active externalism within the philosophy of mind, especially in the cases of Andy Clark's extended mind thesis, and enactivism, of which Alva Noë, for example, is a proponent. Active externalism challenges the traditional thesis of the internalist understanding of the mind, i.e. that mental states are determined solely by factors internal to the individual, independent of the external environment. Within this doctrine, cognitive processes are not confined to the physical boundaries of the individual's brain but extend into the body (embodied cognition) or into the external world (extended mind) through tools, technologies and external systems. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether active externalism is plausible and, consequently, to what extent this theory is philosophically viable. The paper will first clarify the theoretical foundations of active externalism and place it in a broader context within the philosophy of mind. It then critically analyses the main arguments of active externalism, such as the so-called parity principle in the case of the extended mind thesis or embodied cognition within enactivism. Tématem této práce je podrobný popis a kritická reflexe konceptu aktivního externalismu v rámci filosofie mysli, hlavně v instancích teze Extended mind Andyho Clarka, či enaktivismu, jehož proponentem je například Alva Noë. Aktivní externalismus zpochybňuje tradiční tezi internalistického chápání mysli, tedy že mentální stavy jsou určovány výhradně vnitřními faktory jedince, nezávisle na vnějším prostředí. V rámci této doktríny kognitivní procesy nejsou omezeny na fyzické hranice mozku jednotlivce, ale rozšiřují se do těla (Embodied Cognition), či až do vnějšího světa (Extended Mind), prostřednictvím nástrojů, technologií a externích systémů. Cílem této práce bude zjistit, je-li aktivní externalismus plausibilní, potažmo do jaké míry tato teorie může být filozoficky funkční. Práce začne vyjasněním teoretických základů aktivního externalismu a jeho zasazením do širšího kontextu v rámci filozofie mysli. Poté budou kritické analýze podrobeny hlavní argumentační body aktivního externalismu, například tzv. parity principle v případě teze Extended mind či embodied cognition v rámci enaktivismu. V potaz bude brána i kritika těchto argumentů, například problém demarkace, či stanovisko reprezentacionalismu.
