Abstract

The proposed undergraduate thesis aims to critically examine the notion of the category of art, which has played a crucial role in debates about the aesthetic valuation of works of art, particularly within the Anglo-American philosophical tradition from the 1970s onwards. The concept was introduced by the American philosopher and aesthetician Kendall L. Walton in his 1970 study, The Categories of Art. His reflections became the basis of a view of aesthetic judgment that later came to be referred to as aesthetic contextualism. The thesis will be developed on the structural affinity between Walton's conception of the categories of art and one conception of the theory of metaphor, the aim of this comparison being to identify problematic points in Walton's conception. The theory of metaphor that the thesis will consider is that of American philosopher Marcus B. Hester, who draws inspiration from Wittgenstein's remarks on aspectual vision in the eleventh section of his Philosophical Investigations. However, Wittgenstein's observations on the experience of aspect are also used by Walton (in his conception), which supports the validity and potential productivity of the proposed comparison. Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl kriticky přezkoumat pojem kategorie umění, který sehrál zásadní roli v debatách o estetickém oceňování uměleckých děl zejména v rámci angloamerické filozofické tradice od sedmdesátých let dvacátého století dále. Tento pojem představil ve své studii s názvem Kategorie umění z roku 1970 americký filozof a estetik Kendall L. Walton. Jeho úvahy se staly základem pohledu na estetické souzení, který začal být později označován jako estetický kontextualismus. Bakalářská práce bude rozvíjet tezi o strukturní příbuznosti mezi Waltonovou koncepcí kategorií umění a jednou koncepcí teorie metafory, přičemž cílem tohoto srovnání je identifikace problematických míst Waltonovy koncepce. Teorií metafory, kterou bude práce zohledňovat, je teorie amerického filozofa Marcuse B. Hestera, který vycházel z inspirace Wittgensteinovými poznámkami o aspektovém vidění z jedenáctého oddílu jeho Filozofických zkoumání. Wittgensteinovy postřehy o zkušenosti aspektu ovšem využívá ve své koncepci i Walton, což podporuje oprávněnost a potenciální produktivnost navrhované komparace.
