Beyond the Castle Walls: The Representation of the Sexes in Gothic Fiction

Abstract

Abstrakt. Tato magisterská práce zkoumá zobrazení žen a mužů v gotické literatuře od jejího vzniku v polovině osmnáctého století až do poloviny dvacátého století. Vychází z pozorování, že v době, kdy žánr teprve vznikal, existovalo jasné rozlišení rolí mužů a žen v ději. Většinou ženské hlavní hrdinky zaujímaly role trpitelek, zatímco jejich mužští protějšci obvykle plnili roli ochránců či hybatelů děje; naopak ženské protivnické role byly typicky svůdkyně, zatímco mužští protivníci často vystupovali jako bezohlední in- trikáni nebo krutí mocnáři. Nicméně raná léta tohoto žánru byla pozna- menána hrůzami i ideály Francouzské revoluce, jakožto dobou prostoupenou společenskou úzkostí, strachem a změnou, jež postupně přetvořila role žen a můžů v rozvíjejícím se gotickém žánru. Práce dále detailně rozlišuje mezi díly mužských a ženských autorů gotické literatury v průběhu těchto dvou sto- letí. Studie tak mapuje dvojí vývoj rolí obou pohlaví v mužských a ženských autorských větvích gotického žánru v jejich historickém kontextu a doplňuje jej podrobnými rozbory vybraných významných děl. Abstract. The thesis studies the representation of the sexes in Gothic fiction from its birth in the middle of the eighteenth century until the mid-twentieth century. It is founded upon the observation that when the genre was still nascent, there was a clear distinction between the roles men and women played in the plot. For the most part, female protagonists tended to occupy the roles of sufferers, while their male counterparts would commonly assume the roles of protectors, or plot-drivers; conversely, antagonistic female roles would generally be those of seductresses, while antagonistic male characters would often play the part of ruthless grand-schemers or tyrannical overlords. Nevertheless, the genre's infancy was marked by the horrors and ideals of the French Revolution; it was a time permeated with societal anxiety, fear, and change, which in turn would slowly transform the roles of the sexes in the developing Gothic. In addition, the thesis details a sharp distinction between the works of male and female writers of Gothic fiction throughout the two centuries. The thesis, therefore, explores the dual evolution of the roles of the sexes in the male- and female-authored branches of the genre, within their historical context, alongside close readings of specific significant novels.
