Hodnota lidského života ve filosofii Petera Singera

Abstract

Mezi hlavní zájmy filosofa Petera Singera patří práva zvířat, efektivní altruismus či boj s chudobou. S těmito tématy si ho také nejspíš spojí většina čtenářů. V této práci se ale věnuji jinému tématu, které však také Singera provází celý jeho aktivní filosofický život: je jím hodnota života, ke které má Singer velmi neobvyklý přístup. Ve výsledku se díky němu domnívá, že je možné připustit infanticidu postižených novorozenců. Jde o kontroverzní závěr, proti němuž brojila celá řada skupin od konzervativních křesťanů po bojovníky za práva lidí s postižením. Zároveň se objevilo mnoho Singerových zastánců, kteří ho hájili s tím, že postižení novorozenci jsou stejně běžně necháváni zemřít a infanticida je proto humánním řešením. Kvůli diskusi vyvolané tímto tématem a v důsledku celkové neobvyklosti Singerovy teorie věřím, že je smysluplné zabývat se jí v této bakalářské práci. Ta se nejdříve věnuje rozboru Singerova přístupu a důvodům, které Singera vedly k jeho přijetí. Následně rozebírá kritiku této teorie z pohledu práv osob s postižením. Poté přichází kritické zhodnocení názoru, že pro společnost bude smrt některých dětí s postižením lepší. Nakonec práce přináší nástin toho, jak je možné uvažovat o hodnotě života novorozenců jiným způsobem, ale stále v rámci utilitaristického přístupu.

The main focus of Peter Singer's philosophy is on animal rights, effective altruism, and combating poverty. Most readers will probably also associate him with these topics. In this thesis, however, I focus on a different theme, one that has also guided Singer throughout his philosophical career: it is the value of life, to which Singer has a very unusual approach. As a result, he believes that it is possible to allow infanticide of disabled newborns. This is a controversial conclusion, which has been opposed by various groups, from conservative Christians to disability rights activists. At the same time, many have supported Singer, arguing that disabled infants are routinely allowed to die "naturally", and that infanticide is therefore a more humane solution. Given the discussion this topic has sparked and the overall unusual nature of the theory, I believe it is meaningful to examine it in this bachelor's thesis. The thesis first analyzes Singer's approach and the reasons that led him to adopt it. It then discusses the criticisms of this theory from the perspective of disability rights. This is followed by a critical evaluation of the view that society will be better off with the death of some children with disabilities.
