| uk.abstract.en | In Vie, vieillesse et mort d’une femme du peuple (2023), Didier Eribon describes his own mother’s entry into a nursing home, where she died several weeks later. A logical sequel to Retour à Reims (2009), a work of personal exploration that Eribon had once undertaken after the death of his father, this latest book takes his reflections on old age and illness, and our relationship with the elderly and death, much further. In the face of these ultimate experiences, Marxist, Existentialist, Phenomenological and Freudian concepts seem to crumble, leaving only an “agonizing vagueness”. Will the famous writer be forced to revise his philosophical and political convictions to make them more inclusive? And will we too? | cs |
