Pre-nuclear melodic patterning in Czech speakers of English

Abstract

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem intonačních melodických vzorců českých mluvčí angličtiny v prenukleární části. Hlavním cílem je zde zjistit, v jakých oblastech činí anglická intonace českým mluvčím největší potíže. Tato práce by měla přispět k lepšímu porozumění intonace v angličtině s českým přízvukem a k vyznačení oblastí, ve kterých mluvčí nejčastěji chybují. V teoretické části se věnuje problematice intonace v obecnějším měřítku, metodám výuky cizojazyčné intonace a dosud pospaným trendům angličtiny s českým přízvukem. Praktická analýza pak zahrnuje segmentaci a podrobné prozkoumání šestnácti nahrávek českých mluvčí angličtiny. Výsledky analýzy ukázaly, že česká intonace s anglickým přízvukem má značně užší rozpětí F0 než její rodilý protějšek a bývá také méně variabilní. Také se ukázalo, že mluvčí se silnějším přízvukem měli intonaci živější než mluvčí se střední úrovní přízvuku, zejména pak v prenukleární části. Tento fakt do jisté míry nabízí teorii, že právě kvůli této přehnané intonaci nabývají promluvy silnějšího přízvuku. Tyto výsledky nabízejí hlubší vhled do problematiky intonace českých mluvčí angličtiny a rovněž z nich vyvstávají další potenciální body pro budoucí výzkum. This bachelor's thesis concerns itself with the topic of intonational melodic patterns in Czech speakers of English in the prenuclear phase. The main goal is to find out which areas of English intonation cause the most trouble for Czech learners. This paper should contribute to a better understanding of Czech accented English intonation as well as pinpoint areas in which learners make the most errors. The theoretical part deals with the topic of intonation generally, with methods of teaching foreign intonation, and the trends of Czech accented English that have been described so far. The practical analysis then contains segmentation and thorough examination of sixteen recordings of Czech speakers of English. The results of the analysis have shown that Czech accented English intonation has a significantly narrower F0 range than its native counterpart and is also usually less variable. It has also transpired that speakers with a stronger accent had livelier intonation than intermediate accented speakers, particularly in the prenuclear section. This fact raises a theory that it may be precisely the exaggerated intonation which gives the impression of a stronger accent.
