Depictions of scaled armour on Greek vases of the 7th and 6th centuries BC

Abstract

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá systematickou štúdiou zobrazení šupinatých pancierov na attickej čiernofigurovej keramike zo 7. a 6. storočia pred Kristom. Práca rozširuje existujúce štúdie, venujúce sa jednotlivým príkladom zobrazení šupinatých pancierov (predovšetkým na červenofigurovej keramike) a sumarizuje všeobecný trend týchto zobrazení počas sledovaného obdobia. Cieľom práce je vykonanie komplexnej analýzy 209 zobrazení šupinatých pancierov prostredníctvom ikonografickej metódy, zohľadňujúcej jednotlivé detaily na zobrazeniach šupinatých pancierov, ich motívy a prítomnosť ďalších prvkov v rámci scén. Primárnym zámerom analýzy je definovanie šupinatého panciera ako atribútu, s vytýčením jeho odlišných foriem a ich prejavov (ako je tvar a usporiadanie šupín), rozlíšenie scén zobrazení a ich viazanosť na špecifické motívy, a skúmanie potencionálnej implikácie podobností a vzťahov na iné média zobrazení, ako aj medzi vázovými zobrazeniami a nájdenými šupinami z pre prácu relevantných kontextov. Štúdia zobrazení šupinatých pancierov zároveň dopĺňa údaje o existujúcich archeologických nálezoch a písomných správach o prameňoch, ktoré sa tematike venujú. This bachelor's thesis is dedicated to the systematic examination of depictions of scale armour on Attic black-figure vases from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. By extending existing studies primarily focused on red-figure pottery, this thesis seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of the overall trends in depictions of scale armour during the studied period. The thesis intends to conduct detailed analyses of these representations by using an iconographic approach, taking into account the details of the individual images, their motifs, and other elements within the scenes. The primary objectives include defining scaled armour as an attribute, identifying its various forms and manifestations (such as scale shape and arrangement), differentiating the scenes of the depictions and their connections to specific motifs, and exploring potential similarities and relationships with other representation of scaled armours as well as material evidence from relevant contexts. Additionally, the study of scale armour representations complements the information about existing archaeology evidence and written sources, which are dedicated to the topic of scaled armour.
