Marriage and Wifehood in Emily Dickinson's Poetry

Abstract

Emily Dickinson je známa jako samotářka, která se nikdy nevdala a většinu svého života strávila v domě svého otce, kde napsala stovky básní o krásách i strastech života. Mnoho jejích básní se zabývá postavením ženy, manželstvím a rolí manželky. Tyto básně ukazují, že postoje Emily Dickinson byly často v rozporu s názory patriarchální společnosti devatenáctého století. Bakalářská práce analyzuje vybrané básně Emily Dickinson z feministické a queer perspektivy a vysvětluje, jak tyto básně pomáhají porozumět jejím názorům na manželství a roli manželky v devatenáctém století. Autorčiným básním o manželství lze rozumět jako projevu její tiché vzpoury proti světu, ve kterém žila. Tyto básně se výrazně liší, avšak všechny svým způsobem vyjadřují nespokojenost s rolí ženy ve společnosti a frustraci z patriarchální a heteronormativní představy o lásce a manželství. Bakalářská práce se pokusí rozhodnout, zda neustále se měnící pohled na manželství Emily Dickinson mohl být ovlivněn neutuchajícím společenským tlakem, nebo zda záměrně vytvořila různé lyrické subjekty, aby ukázala komplexitu toho, jak ženy vnímaly manželství. Emily Dickinson is known as a recluse who never got married and spent most of her life in her father's house where she wrote hundreds of poems about both the beauties and anxieties of life. Many of them revolve around the theme of womanhood, wifehood and marriage, and reveal how Dickinson's ideas conflict with the views of the patriarchal society in the 19th century. The thesis will analyze selected poems by Dickinson from a feminist and queer perspective and argue that they help us understand her views on marriage and roles of women in the patriarchal heteronormative society. The poet's work revolving around marriage could have served as her quiet rebellion against the world in which she lived. The poems differ in significant ways, but they all ultimately convey Dickinson's dissatisfaction with her role as a woman and her frustration with the patriarchal and heteronormative idea of romantic love and marriage. The thesis will attempt to decide whether Dickinson's ever-changing perspective on marriage could have been partially influenced by the unrelenting societal pressure put on her, or if she purposefully created different speakers and characters to show the complexity of women's views on marriage.
