The perception, form, and role of tea in contemporary Korean society

Abstract

Tato práce se zabývá rolí čaje a problematikou obnovy a invence čajové kultury v moderní společnosti Korejské Republiky. Čaj hraje v Jižní Koreji důležitou roli nejen jako oblíbený nápoj, kulturní export ale objevuje se i v náboženských rituálech. Korejská vláda podporovala obnovu čajové kultury a obřadů od druhé poloviny 20. století. Podoba čaje se v průběhu moderní historie mění a vyvíjí. Tato práce si dává za úkol popsat a identifikovat, jak Korejská společnost čaj vnímá a jakou podobu má, dále v jakých aspektech života se čaj objevuje a jakou roli zastává. Jako hlavní zdroj tato práce využívá terénní průzkum o čaji provedený v Koreji, dále anglicky a korejsky psané publikace které zabývají čajem.

This paper examines the role of tea, tea culture restoration and invention of tea related traditions in contemporary Republic of Korea. Tea plays an important part in lives of modern South Koreans, whether it be as a popular drink, cultural export, or part of religious rituals. The Korean government has been supporting the renewal of tea culture and rituals since the second half of 20th century. The form and role of tea has been changing and evolving in throughout modern history. The goal of this thesis is to describe and identify how the Korean society perceives tea, in which aspects of life tea exists and what role does it have. The primary source for this thesis is field research conducted in Korea, further primary sources constitute English and Korean publications that deal with Korean tea culture.
