The Spanish Conditional (with Reference to English and Czech): A Contrastive Cognitive Approach

Abstract

Monografie se zabývá španělským kondicionálem (cantaría) s ohledem na kondicionál anglický (would) a český (zpíval bych). Text představuje klasifikaci všech užití této slovesné formy vycházející z kognitivní gramatiky a Langackerova pojetí groundu. Klasifikace je postavena na rozsáhlém autentickém materiálu čítajícím 1800 užití kondicionálu ve všech třech jazycích, přičemž tato užití pochází z paralelních i jednojazyčných korpusů. Analýza bere v úvahu modální, temporální i evidenciální charakteristiky kondicionálu. Jakožto výchozí funkce je definována existence sekundárního groundu, na němž kondicionální význam závisí. Přístup navržený v monografii umožňuje nový pohled na španělský kondicionál a jeho definici jakožto relativní slovesné formy. Relativnost je zde chápána nejen ve vztahu ke kategorii času, ale také ve vztahu ke kategoriím modality a evidenciálu. V analýzách je kladen důraz na evidenciální a mirativní rozměr kondicionálu ve všech zkoumaných jazycích, a to i v těch typech jeho užití, kde byl tento element jeho významu doposud opomíjen (např. vyjádření hypotetičnosti nebo zdvořilosti).

The monograph examines the Spanish conditional (cantaría) with respect to the English conditional (would) and the Czech conditional (zpíval bych). The text presents a classification of all the uses of this verb form based on cognitive grammar and Langacker’s notion of ground. The classification is based on extensive authentic material obtained from parallel and monolingual corpora. The analysis takes into account the modal, temporal and evidential characteristics of the conditional. The conditional meaning is dependent on the existence of a secondary ground, which is defined as the default feature. The approach proposed in the monograph allows a new perspective on the Spanish conditional and its definition as a relative verb form. Relativity is understood here not only in relation to the category of tense, but also in relation to the categories of modality and evidentiality. The analyses emphasise the evidential and mirative dimensions of the conditional in all the languages studied, even in those types of use where this dimension has not been extensively analysed so far (e.g. hypothetical and tentative uses of the conditional).
