Abstract

My diploma work is about military chaplains because it is quite a new service in our army and this term sounds very mysteriously for the public. In my work I tried to answer the most common questions you receive if you ask people what they think about military chaplains: How is it possible that chaplain can be a soldier and how can he use a weapon? In the first part I write about characters mentioned in The Old Testament who believed in God and were soldiers, about Christians and using weapons, and about military service during the First Republic from 1918 to 1950. Second part is more practical. It is based on a study from the Ministry of Defence about believers in the army, foreign missions, etc., and on interviews with military chaplains focused on their work, relationship among themselves, ecumenism etc. I hope that this diploma work will give the answer to the questions and enrich all readers as it has enriched me.
