En linguistique néerlandaise, il existe un Principe, dit d’Inhérence, permettant d’expliquer la
position obligatoire d’un certain nombre de constituants immédiatement avant le reste verbal.
L’ objectif de la présente contribution vise à apporter une première réponse à la question de savoir
si ce principe est généralisable au français. A travers une description contrastive, nécessairement
partielle, du complément circonstanciel de direction en néerlandais et en français contemporains,
nous montrons que ce principe est inopérable en français. Nous émettons l’hypothèse que
la divergence observée est liée aux niveaux suprasegmentaux des deux langues. Le néerlandais se
caractérisant par l’accent de phrase non contrastif et mobile possède une structure pragmatique
‘souple’, alors que le français qui possède l’accent de groupe, écrasant l’accent de mot fuyant, recourt
à une structure pragmatique ‘stricte’. La conséquence en est que le Principe d’Inhérence,
ayant recours à une position fixe, a toute latitude de se déployer en néerlandais, contrairement au
français.; The so-called Principle of Inherency in Dutch linguistics offers an explanation for the obligatory position
of a certain number of constituents immediately before the verbal remainder. The goal of this
contribution is to provide an answer to the question whether this principle has validity in French
as well. Through a – necessarily partial — contrastive description of the complement of direction in
contemporary Dutch and French, we show that this principle is inoperable in French. We hypothesize
that the observed divergence is related to the supra-segmental level of the two languages. Dutch
is characterized by a non-contrastive and mobile sentence accent, and thus has a ‘flexible’ pragmatic
structure, whereas French, which lacks a sentence accent, has a word-group accent which triggers
a ‘strict’ pragmatic structure. Consequently, the Principle of Inherence, based on a fixed position,
has full latitude to be realized in Dutch, unlike French.

This paper aims to provide a new perspective on the study of discourse particles by analyzing some
elements of metaoperational grammar as a starting point. Specifically, the approach will be focused
on the application of three fundamental criteria for the enunciative analysis of utterances (information,
the utterer’s attitudes, and reference to the speaker). This perspective will help to explore
the explanatory potential of this grammatical approach in the study of discourse particles in the
Spanish language.

The paper deals with parasynthetic formations combining the prefix en- and the suffix -en, which
are sometimes regarded as an example of a circumfix in English. The aim is to find more instances
of this pattern than the usual three or four mentioned in the literature (enlighten, embolden, enliven,
and embiggen). After searching three corpora of several billion words without much success, an experiment
was made to search the Web for hypothetical verb tokens constructed from monosyllabic
adjectives on the pattern provided by the four initial verbs. The search confirmed that more than
a hundred such verbs occur on the Web. The discovery of so many en-Adj-en verbs unacknowledged
in standard reference books is attributed to the effect of big data on the Web; it is assumed that the
en-Adj-en pattern is the type of process whose function is primarily pragmatic, occasion-specific
and discourse-oriented, rather than lexical (i.e. concept labelling). As a result, although the pattern
is available for active use, these formations, after having served their purpose, rarely get beyond the
nonce-word stage, let alone enter the lexicon.

Article abstracts may be among the most efficient means of disseminating research results if certain
basic principles regarding their content and structure are followed. No research outcomes have yet
been made available on the structure of abstracts published in Czech linguistic periodicals. The current
study presents a survey of 120 such abstracts collected from four journals and, on the basis of
rhetorical moves analysis, describes their shared features, strengths and shortcomings. The results
show that many of these abstracts fail to include moves which are generally considered obligatory
(results, data and method description) and that their informative value is consequently lower than
sufficient. The study concludes by recommending that awareness of rhetorical principles amongst
Czech academics be raised e.g. through instructional texts or courses.
